85 YEARS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE

It is 1938 and the world, especially Europe, is in turmoil. The fear of Hitler’s next move has created much unrest. Juniata is now part of Altoona and there is much to be done and no one seems to be doing anything about it.

So, a group of men from the 13th Ward met in the old fire hall on Eighth Avenue on the evening of September 8, 1938, to form a Greater 13th Ward Civic Association for the expressed purpose of getting people interested in Juniata and getting things done. Mr. R. E. Black was named Chairman. He and Attorney Donald Brubaker advised those in attendance of the things that should be taken up with the City officials. It should be done through the Association for the Benefit of all those in the 13th Ward.

The very first meeting to be held in the Memorial Park Pavilion took place on January 28, 1939. The Association was growing and accomplishing a great deal for the community. Realizing the impact they were having, the group decided to petition the Honorable Judge Marion D. Patterson for a certificate of a non-profit organization. And so on the 27th day of December 1939 the certificate of Incorporation of the JUNIATA CIVIC ASSOCIATION OF THE THIRTEENTH WARD was established.

Since that time the Association has played an important role in the community life of the Juniata neighborhood and in the City of Altoona. Our main facility, the Juniata Pavilion, has been the home to a wide range of community events and activities. This facility is open and available to the general public. It can be booked for your special event from our Facilities Page.

The Juniata Pavilion and our nearby Sports Complex have been the home of numerous community sporting events including baseball, basketball, Soccer, football, track and field meets and Special Olympics. The Juniata Civic Association has a long history of enriching the lives of our citizen with sports and recreation opportunities.

The Civic Association also offers a variety of special community events. One of our largest events is our annual fall Juniata Day celebration. You can learn more about our special events from the Special Events web page.
